Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic has made any sort of planning difficult, and that includes trying to plan any sort of travel, vacation, or family holiday. Adding to the confusion is that different regions are operating under different restrictions, so booking any sort of family mini-break can take a fair bit of figuring out.

Can I book a holiday cottage for Christmas?

The short answer is yes, but it can get a bit complicated. As the rules currently stand, it’s possible that your Christmas holiday will be limited to your household. You may also be limited in terms of how far from home you’re able to travel. When you’re looking for options on what you can book and where you can go, it’s probably sensible to look for something that’s relatively close to home and doesn’t depend on getting your entire extended family together.

Should I book now?

It’s understandably tempting, and quite sensible, to hold off on booking anything until closer to Christmas when we’ve all got a better sense of what restrictions we’re going to have to navigate. However, because everyone is looking at staycations within the UK - instead of perhaps heading overseas for the festive season - the demand for holiday cottages around Christmas is much higher than we normally see at this time of year. This means that if you leave your booking until the last minute, you may find it impossible to secure a holiday cottage that meets the needs of your family.

What happens if I need to cancel my holiday cottage booking?

This is a really important consideration. Part of the complexity is that the UK holiday cottage market has a lot of different operators through which properties are rented - it’s important to look at the specific cancellation terms of each property that you’re considering. The good news is that everyone has pretty much updated their terms and conditions to respond to the uncertainty created by Covid-19. As a general rule, you won’t be penalised if government restrictions mean that you’re unable to take up your holiday cottage. But make sure that you’ve checked the fine print before confirming your booking.

What about 2021?

Thinking ahead to 2021 may feel a bit ambitious when most of us are struggling to think beyond what’s happening tomorrow. But it’s good to have something to look forward to, and there’s no down-side to turning your mind to your 2021 travel wish-list. There’s a half-term break in February, and Easter is early this year - it’s worth taking a look at what holiday cottages or vacation properties you could book in the UK, as well as countries such as France, Italy, and Spain.
