Wells-next-the-Sea is one of North Norfolk’s most popular coastal destinations, offering visitors a wide variety of ways to while away the hours either exploring the vast beach or the town.
Formerly a major port for the export of grain, its quay/harbour is now used by smaller craft offering fishing cruises and boat tours. The Albatross, moored in the Quay, is a former Dutch cargo ship built in 1899 as a North Sea clipper. One of the oldest sailing ships still afloat, instead of sailing the high seas, she is now pretty much a permanent fixture on the quay and is used as a bar, restaurant and music venue. The Maltings is now a major new cultural hub providing the town with arts and entertainment including art and craft exhibitions and films, live ballet, opera, theatre. So you'll soon realise there is so much to see and do, and that's before you have even got to the beach!
The town offers a wide selection of places to eat, whether it's just a snack or something more substantial. Worth a mention are The Crown Inn and The Globe, both of which are on ‘The Buttlands’ and excellent gastro pubs. For a taste of locally caught seafood, the Wells Crab House Cafe or French's fish and chips are hard to beat.
From the picturesque quay you can either walk (it takes twenty minutes), or take the narrow-gauge railway or car to the town's most spectacular beach, renowned for its colourful beach huts and sands stretching as far as the eye can see. This beautiful coastline is a top destination for walkers, bird watchers and seal trip excursions, not forgetting catching crabs, the local favourite activity from the quay.
The Wells to Holkham walk, either via the beach or coastal path through the pinewoods, takes you through an Area of Natural Beauty and is a great thing to do at any time of year. Stop at The Victoria at Holkham for a drink and lunch before either walking, or catching the Coasthopper bus service, back to Wells. With a bus stop just outside this lovely development, it is perfect if you want to leave the car at home.
With the spectacular country estates of Holkham, Sandringham and Blickling just a short drive away, Wells provides year-round enjoyment for all ages.
